MASSMoca Made Simple: Enhancing Visitor Experience with New Signage.

The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art is a museum in a converted Arnold Print Works factory building complex located in North Adams, Massachusetts. It is one of the largest centers for contemporary visual art and performing arts in the United States. Due to its lack of signage for an exceptionally large and complex space, many of its visitors often lose their sense of direction. My task was to create a compelling signage system that could inform and guide visitors throughout the museum.

I traced the architectural shape of the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASSMoca) to create a new map that accurately illustrates the buildings and the entire space. The previous map lacked clarity and content hierarchy, so I redesigned it to provide a more intuitive and informative guide for visitors. The new map, along with the on-site signage, uses visual colors to indicate which areas are open. I chose a muted and toned-down color palette to reflect the industrial nature of the space. Given that many buildings have multiple floors, I opted for an angular design to effectively showcase this aspect.
